Location

The Yukon Territory is one of the last virtually untouched yet developed areas in northern Canada. This mine makes an excellent base camp for hiking, river fishing, quad and canoe tours, winter snowmobile expeditions, or simply as a vacation home to relax with the opportunity to pan for gold. The mine is in a hunting sanctuary, meaning hunting is not allowed (for non-indigenous people). From the porch I was able to observe the following wildlife: moose, grizzly and black bear, wood bison, wolf, lynx, porcupine and squirrel. Along the river I discovered cariboo and mountain sheep tracks. A beaver family is also active. The nearest neighbor is a miner south of Rainbow Mine. He has his camp about 3 kilometers away at Kimberley Creek.

Path to the mine

The turnoff to the mine road is at KM 1316.5 of the Alaska Highway. From this point, a trail leads approximately 15 kilometers to the Rainbow Mine Cabin. The Jarvis River has to be crossed twice.

The access to the mine is best managed with a high-legged four-wheel drive vehicle. The equipment with a strong cable winch is recommended. Instead of a 4x4 vehicle, you can also drive there with a quad or side-by-side. But only when the water level of the Jarvis is low and at least in a two-person formation (quad).
